Manifesto from Tattoo Circus Helsinki:
“For last 10 years Tattoo Circus Helsinki has been a political prisoner support event. We took our inspiration for this event from “Tattoo Circus” events that have been previously held in other European cities. Our aim is to combine many things into one event: a political event to show solidarity with political prisoners, to have an explicit anti-prison stance through lectures and letter writing, with the money donated from the event going towards political prisoners; a social event that could bring people together in their interest to help others and work against oppressions and repressions; and an event to showcase tattoo culture, where tattoo artists from near and far have come to show their support for political prisoners by donating their time!
Tattoo Circus Helsinki is a unique event, and we think it’s important to grow ideas of collective responsibility and solidarity. Getting a tattoo, listening to a lecture, holding a workshop, helping make food, writing to a prisoner – there is a long list of actions one can do that help break down barriers and further the abolition of state systems like prison or the police.
We as a collective want to go beyond a prison abolitionist stance and want also to include different aspects of anti-repression activities in what we do. Political repression, often carried out by the police, can include intimidation, surveillance, arbitrary arrest, physical and verbal violence, torture… Many aspects of repression are everyday life for those in prison. Therefore to us, anti-repression work includes things like prisoner aftercare and psychological aspects of being in prison. However, repression is also found in our own communities and day-to-day life – such as surveillance and the militarisation of urban spaces and cities, but also domestic violence and racist violence. We must recognise the intersectional nature of repression and take it into account in our actions. We therefore support actions that are anti-patriarchal, anti-racist, anti-imperialist, and anti-capitalist. This can include trauma support, mental health support, anti-domestic violence work, and accountability to communities, as well as supporting specific communities that face oppression (trans, Kurdish, refugee, etc).
It is our hope that Tattoo Circus Helsinki can be a space to learn about and start to organise against prisons and repression. We want to provide a low-treshold starting point from which to grow anti-repression organising in a broad and collective way. We want Tattoo Circus Helsinki to be a meaningful event, where everyone can participate and become part of a diverse struggle against the repression of our freedom.
SOLIDARITY IS OUR WEAPON!“
