There are not many societies in Europe that have kept the fascist movement in the margins of society throughout the whole of the 20th century. England, and United Kingdom in general, marks one of the few exceptions. Thanks to the broad anti-fascist movement with their diverse tactics and levels of militancy, the fascists have been marginalized in every sphere of social life: the streets, stadiums, pubs, work places, music scenes, and labour movements. Anti-fascism developed from a mere “self-defence of anti-capitalist movements” to an offensive movement with its own organizations and principles. The book tells the “untold story of Anti-Fascist Action”. Founded in 1985, AFA soon became the most dynamic player in the frontlines of this intense political conflict. Wherever fascists organized, AFA was a constant pain in their ass.
What can we learn from the struggles of these revolutionaries? In the reading circle, the experiences of AFA will lead us to discuss different aspects and strategies of anti-fascism. Together we will discuss their relevance to the contemporary Finnish context and improve our methodological tool box. The focus is in common discussion, and the texts serve as an inspiration. You are welcome to join at any point of the gatherings.
